Mary O’Brien and Ka O’Sullivan held a joint birthday party recently and instead of presents a charitable donation was requested from those who attended. Subsequently €1000 was given to Kerry Hospice to improve the quality of life of patients and their families facing the problem associated with life-threatening illnesses, and €1000 was given to ICRR Air Ambulance Helicopter Service, helping to ensure a rapid transfer for critically ill patients in Kenmare to Cork University Hospital.

Mary and Ka, pictured with John Kearney and Ruth Burton, thanked everyone who came, enjoyed the night and gave so generously.

On August 13th St Patrick’s Church, Kenmare, was packed with family and friends of the late Jacqueline Linney, all wanting to say their last farewell. It was a memorial service that mirrored the Jacqueline we all knew. Thanks go to Rev. Michael Cavanagh and all who took part in this service. How the months fly, and it won’t be long before our Women’s Group return to the Adult Education centre, for their weekly meetings. Sheen Falls Lodge hosts very special reunion

In November, 1992, Elizabeth and Seamus Stanton of Atlantic Beach, North Carolina, met a young couple from Belfast whilst both couples were holidaying in Paris. It was the Doyle’s first night in Paris and the Stantons final night of their holiday. After sharing a number of bottles of wine, the Doyles, whose trip was booked last minute with no plans or knowledge of Paris, borrowed the Stanton’s Paris guidebook. Seamus asked that they post it back as he had many notes in it and Una Doyle quickly responded that she ‘Would NOT’, but the Stantons had to visit them in Belfast to collect it! Two years later the Stantons got off the Stranraer - Belfast ferry and a 26 year relationship began. Indeed, with the Stantons a generation older than the Doyles, they figuratively ‘adopted’ each other, and over the ensuring years, they all ‘crossed-the-pond’ in both directions numerous times, and the families had children, grand-children and great-grand children. The Doyles and Stantons holidayed in Kenmare together for the first time in 1995, and the Stantons fell in love with our beautiful town, returning twice over the years with American friends, but always ending their journey in Belfast with the Doyles and extended family Last year, Seamus, now in his 80’s, edicted that they had to all get together in Kenmare for a holiday, luckily Elizabeth agreed! At the start of July they all began arriving in Kenmare, from North Carolina, Florida, New York, New Jersey, Manchester UK, and Belfast, in total 20 members of the combined clans! Sadly, schedules allowed them only two full days as ‘One’ but a brilliant two days

it was, with a grand celebration dinner taking place at Sheen Falls Lodge on July 16th. Good craic would an understatement, and fortunately for the other lodge guests, the door to the Drawing room could be closed! In addition to their enduring and wonderful friendship, the gathering of the clans had much to celebrate including Jamie Quigley’s birthday, Dr. Stephen’s graduation from Medical School and the 60th wedding anniversary of Elizabeth and Seamus. Seamus’s grandparents came from Cork but he just loves Kerry, and Kenmare has a special place in his heart, as it does in the hearts of every member of the cross Atlantic family who have vowed to return!

Two Green Shoots

Former student of Pobailscoil Inbhear Sceine, Kloë Wood Lyndorff has returned to Ireland after years of study and work abroad, to launch an innovative new Garden/Feasts & Escapes project called ‘Two Green Shoots’. Kloë, who grew up at The Ewe Experience in Glengarriff, and her partner Adam Carveth, had a busy winter re-discovering a ‘lost’ garden from the 1940’s which has recently been opened as ‘The Garden of Re-Imagination’. Now the venue for their regular ‘Feasts’ and ‘Events’, the busy pair will be running workshops and lively ‘Taste Tours’ all summer. The latter is an exciting 90 minute tour & taste of the myriad of edible delights in this wonderful garden, that specialises in plants that are not only beautiful but tasty and wonderful for wildlife. In support of the new venture, Benoit from Lorge Chocolates in Bonane provided specially made chocolates for ‘goodie’ bags at their opening. Since Adam was the head gardener at Knebworth in Hertfordshire (the venue for Harry Potter) and Kloë is a biologist and environmental designer, they also offer quality garden care and down-to-earth garden design, but with a difference. www.twogreenshoots.com

‘Drink-Link’ Bus Service launched in Bonane

Report by Heike O’Sullivan

Minister for Justice Charlie Flanagan TD visits Kenmare Garda Station, accompanied by Cllr Patrick O’Connor-Scarteen.

Participants at the juvenile fishing competition organised by the Kenmare Trout Anglers Club at Looscanagh Lake on August 12th.

Last August Bank Holiday Weekend saw the launch of the new Bonane to Kenmare ‘Drink Link’ bus service. Its official name is: Local Link Kerry Evening Time Service (which takes ages to say), and it aims to tackle isolation in rural areas such as Bonane. Similar to the Social Bus, fondly nicknamed ‘The Booze Bus’, operating in Bonane back in the early Noughties, this new service will run once a week. The Bonane - Kenmare - Bonane service is available on Saturday evenings. Local Link Kerry has published a route with nine collection points on their website www.locallinkkerry.ie. It also operates a door-to-door collection and drop-off service on demand, just like the weekly Wednesday morning service. To avail of the door-todoor service, intending passengers must phone 066 714 7002 (MonFri 9am-5pm) or 087 345 2648 (Sat 6.30-7.30pm) to register and book a seat. The return fare is €5 and the Free Travel Pass is accepted. The bus is to arrive at Kenmare’s Square at 8.30pm, and will depart from there at 11.30pm. The evening Local Link service is available to locals and visitors alike. It’s not just a ‘Drink-Link’ for going to the pub, but will also enable us to visit family or friends. Perhaps it will also be useful to Bonane’s youth for the trip home after an evening of socialising or training in town, instead of relying on ‘Mum’s Taxi’. When Minister for Transport Shane Ross launched the first Evening Time Service on behalf of the National Transport Authority in Listowel on 22nd June last, he warned the public: “I have to stress that this is a pilot project; one that we very much want to succeed and flourish, so I would ask everyone to make use of it. It’s your transport system, developed for your benefit and it is here to serve you.” The message is loud and clear: You’re always onto the government about a lack of rural services. Here’s your bus: Use it or lose it!

John O’Hare The juvenile fishing competition on Lough Luascanaigh (Irish for Lake of the Swallows) is an event which has been managed by the Kenmare Trout Anglers club since the year dot, was held on August 12th. The excitement and enthusiasm of the children brought back waves of nostalgia to club members. Fish lost, fish caught, fish that mysteriously vanished, little arguments, one of which ended with a young man being unceremoniously dumped into the lake before being quickly rescued by club members, hooks stuck in different body parts included one with a wriggling worm stuck in a young ladies lip! Her biggest worry was that she would miss a Jedward concert in Killarney, but, as a club member suggested, if she attended the concert the way she was the size of the hook and worm would make the terrible twins hair stand on end. In previous times the parents just left the kids off for the day, throwing a fierce responsibility on the club for their care and safety. Now it is a family outing with a great hands on approach by the new generation of parents who really spoil that children with care, and that is no bad thing. There is no greater joy than being involved with children with respect and good manners towards other people and a special mention must be made of the club officers and members who put so much effort into making the day such a great success, and of course the children without whom the day would not exist. Proof if proof is needed that was were no complaints over the prize-giving, and no soft drinks, burgers, sausages, buns, or packets of crisps leftover from the barbecue. A wonderful day was had by all At the start of the year a European wide ban on the killing of seabass was supposed to be introduced. This law was to protect the fish, whose numbers have shown a huge decline in recent years (the bass you see for sale or on restaurant menus are farmed mostly in the Mediterranean). The new protection law as far as I am aware has not yet been put into force due to legal hold-ups and this turn of events has caused a lot of bother for anglers. In some counties I

am writing about our own fishery officers are enforcing the ban, in other areas they are going by the old bass bylaws. I have been told of prosecutions pending but no one has been convicted. All this has created confusion in sea fishing circles and it is usually at the 11th hour or when it is too late there are protection laws are introduced. The seabass will go the way of the dodo if something is not done. You are right to blame others for the problem but try to bite the bullet for the next few years and see what will happen. The same advice is true for salmon anglers, hold tough and hope for the best. Good news on the trout fishing front, not only was there good catches on the children’s day out but Angus have told me I’ve got catches in the Killarney up at lakes or so. Another angler who travelled up to lock mask to fish in the world cop Sethi could not believe how many trout with “and the big numbers of fish being weighed in on the final day. All this in one of the driest years in my memory who would’ve expected it? The rainbow trout fishing in Bath and Lough Fada by all accounts is also excellent with the fish I have seen being in excellent condition and really beautifully coloured and friend and I have been told great fighters as well. Good news on the trout fishing front, not only were there good catches on the children’s day out but anglers have told me of good catches in the Killarney upper lakes also. Another angler who travelled up to Lough Mask to fish in the world cup said he could not believe how many trout were caught the big numbers of fish being weighed in on the final day. All this in one of the driest years in my memory, who would’ve expected it? The rainbow trout fishing in Barfinnihy Lake and Lough Fada by all accounts is also excellent with the fish I have seen being in excellent condition, really beautifully coloured and finned, and I have been told great fighters as well. Now the bad news. The salmon fishing to date has been an unmitigated disaster. Low water levels and high temperatures have played havoc with the few salmon who reach the river pool. Fish are cold blooded and even the heat of your hands will burn the skin (that is why one should wet their hands before handling and releasing fish) and the salmon in the pools have been suffering from lack of oxygen in the water and the heat of same. Any cuts or bruises on their bodies can become seriously infected, some with fungal growth which is disgusting to look at. The bottom line is that a whole lot of salmon will die, most of them unnoticed. The loss of all these breeding stock from our rivers at a time when their numbers are already in decline is to be regretted, and the cause of all this is human activity. I am glad I am the age I am, as the future is to break to contemplate.

Local dancers from the Bernie O’Sullivan School of Irish Dancing ended their dancing year with great success in the CRDM All Ireland Championships in Dublin’s Citywest Hotel with Kane Reidy taking 1st place and becoming the All Ireland Champion Boys 14-16, Emer O’Sullivan and Laura Wiley taking 2nd place, and dancers successful in all categories. Dancers, their teachers and their families gathered in the beautiful Sheen Falls Lodge in June for their Worlds Party to celebrate their amazing achievements at the World Championships in April, with 3 solo World Titles and 3 Céilí World Titles to celebrate, the party was a momentous occasion. This year saw the school participate in the Fleadh Cheoil for the first time and both the U12 and U15 team qualified out of the Kerry region to compete at Munster Level, to successfully qualify through to compete end of August in the All Ireland’s. Dance classes will start back in September and new dancers are always welcome. It is a great way to keep fit, have fun and make new friends along the way. As many will know Kerry County Council have purchased approximately 13 acres of land, known as the Peninsula land, down by Kenmare Pier. Engineers are currently working on marking out the new boundaries and fencing them. We have been told that the land will be ready to be opened to the Public by the beginning of Sept. As we know these things take time, but we are very grateful to Kerry County Council for progressing this matter as quickly as possible. Plans for the land have not yet been designed but it is hoped that a draft plan, to be used as a starting point, will be drawn up over the coming months. And so from the future back to our past! The first CCT Suicide Therapy Centre in Ireland has opened its doors in the Stone Arch Centre in Kenmare. According to the WHO, worldwide about 800,000 people die by suicide every year, one person every 40 seconds, and there is evidence that for each death by suicide, more than 20 other people attempt suicide. The implications of the data indicate that it is very important to have the right support for people with suicidal ideation in place. According to Gitti Maas (MIACP, M.Ed., Founder CCT-Ireland), counsellor in private practice in the Stone Arch Centre Kenmare, Contextual-Conceptual Therapy (CCT) can offer this support. Gitti says, “CCT is an exciting approach to suicide therapy, developed by Seattle based suicidologist Fredric Matteson. In fact, it is the only therapy model specifically for suicide I am aware of. I am convinced that CCT is the missing link in our efforts to bring suicide numbers in Ireland down and support suicidal clients in their struggle to overcome their despair.” CCT stresses that feeling suicidal is not an illness, but an identity crisis. “This insight changes how we meet the suicidal person,” Gitti explains. “Reasoning, traditional approaches and medication may help the suicidal person for a while but often cannot really reach the person deeply enough to end their suffering, as it does not touch the root of their suicidal thinking.” Instead, traditional therapy addresses the ways the suicidal person expresses their pain - which is the equivalent of fighting smoke instead of fire. As a result, the suicidal person often spirals further into experiencing anxiety, shame, guilt, hate, suicidal despair - to finally attempt suicide. Gitti points out that if we start looking at suicide as an identity crisis (which CCT does), as opposed to a sign of mental illness, we have to ask, What if suicide is not about what’s wrong with the suicidal person, but about what’s right with them? This opens the door to a new, unique and successful way of meeting the suicidal person and supporting them to engage in self-exploration, which results in resolving their identity crisis and ends their suicidal feelings. With CCT, the suicidal person’s moment of crisis becomes their moment of transformation. Gitti has been in close contact with Fredric Matteson, the founder of CCT Suicide Therapy in Seattle, since 2014. She has visited the Seattle CCT Centre several times and has studied CCT extensively. She continues to see adults in the Stone Arch Centre who seek counselling for other reasons than feeling suicidal, such as abuse, anxiety, loss, life changes, relationship problems or trauma to name a few and can be contacted on 086 - 40 10 738.

Kenmare & District Gardening Club

It has been a very interesting time since we last met. Firstly, we’ve had a real summer and what a time of heat and sunshine but now the spell is broken and it has thankfully rained. Surprisingly, most gardens survived very well - in the Kerry area anyway. Secondly, the Club has had two very eventful and enjoyable day trips. In June, we went off to the Cork area where our speaker from early June, Adam Whitbourn, guided us around the Blarney Castle gardens. It was such a hot day and we jumped from tree shade to tree shade! A further two gardens near Glanmire and in Glaunthaune followed, both very different but so interesting and then we had the usual retail therapy at a garden nursery! In July, we were again blessed with the weather as we explored three gardens and a nursery in the West Cork area and spent a wonderful day out. Our next meeting will be on Thursday, 6th September at 7.30pm at Gateway, when the well-known Wicklow-based landscape architect and garden designer, Tim Austen, will be talking to us about hard landscaping and construction features in garden design. Called ‘Between a Rock and a Hard Place’ he will be illustrating his talk with slides and ideas from his own work including the extraordinary design in his new home in Wicklow. It sounds most interesting so hope to see you there.

Kenmare Peninsula. I am delighted that Kerry County Council have purchased the peninsula land, and I feel that this would be of benefit to the people of Kenmare in the future. Additional Parking in Kenmare. I have again asked Kerry County Council to pursue in purchasing the former Ceann Mara plastic factory to be used as an additional carpark for the town. Farming. The recent prolonged heat wave has seen grass growth and fodder being reduced, this has impacted in the prices of sheep and cattle as many of the potential buyers along the east coast and mid-lands had very little grazing. However there is starting to be an improvement in weather conditions and also grass growth which I hope will see demand once again return. Fair Day. Thank you to the Kerry county council staff, Kenmare Tidy Towns committee, and An Garda Síochána for their work to help make the fair day such a success. Kilgarvan Show. Well done to the Kilgarvan Show committee and volunteers for another successful show. Kenmare Drag Hunt. Special Novena begins at Bonane Mass Rock

Report and photography by Heike O’Sullivan

Any casual observer on the road leading into Baurearagh Valley, or travelling on the Knockduff road on the evening of 7th August last will be forgiven for wondering what the large accumulation of parked cars was all about. Along Coillte’s forest track, its lay-bys and the turning circle at the bottom, cars, vans and jeeps were competing for parking space. Groups of people, some small, some larger; people walking in pairs or - occasionally on their own, made their way down to the Baurearagh River. They ignored the stepping stones leading across, slippery from a recent shower. The small bridge carried them to the other side of the river where one after another negotiated the narrow footpath and then the uneven steps leading uphill.

breeze, supported by guitar music and a small choir. Mass was directly followed by the first evening of prayers of a Special Novena to Our Lady of Lourdes, for those who are sick and in need of intercession in our parish. Just as the Mass Rock

congregation started praying the Rosary, a heavy and lengthy shower watered the soil of Baurearagh and Inishfoyle, unusually dry after many weeks of very warm weather. To the credit of all those assembled, nobody fled to the cars. Only the young baby was carried to shelter. The elderly dog shook water from its coat. The man beside me did, too. Much later, when people walked back to their cars, most seemed to agree that it had been an hour well spent ... The Special Novena continued with Rosary and Prayers each night in St Feaghna’s Church, Bonane and concluded on 15th August after 9.30am mass. Thank you to all who attended and special thanks to Father Michael for giving us the lovely experience of celebrating mass at Inse an tSagairt!! Sorry you got wet!

Bonane Community Council had called on the people of Bonane and from further afield, to attend Holy Mass at Bonane’s Mass Rock at Inse an tSagairt. Despite the dull evening, a great crowd of parishioners, ‘ex-pats’ and visitors had answered the call. Every age group was represented: From a young baby, well wrapped up against the persistent drizzle, to a very elderly gentleman who had farmed in Bonane all his life. Even one elderly dog took its well deserved place amongst its people. The Mass Rock at Inse an tSagairt has always held a special place in the hearts of the people of Bonane. It is situated in scenic Baurearagh Valley, at the foot of the Inishfoyle cliffs which developed during the Ice Age. The isolated location is typical for Irish mass rocks from Penal Times, given that celebrating and attending a Catholic service was punishable by death at that time. In olden times, mass times were not regularly scheduled and were communicated by word of mouth. A bit like two weeks ago, when Bonane Community Council sent an SMS to all on their contacts list. Local parish priest Father Michael Moynihan found a temporary altar under the Mass Rock when he arrived; lovingly decked out by ladies from the parish. He proceeded to celebrate mass, undeterred by showers or

Local writer launches poetry book

17

Local Writer Faye Boland has enjoyed two recent competition wins for poetry writing. In May 2018 she won the Robert Leslie Boland Prize sponsored by the Ballydonoghue Bardic Festival. In October 2017 she won the Hanna Greally International Literary Award, run by the Síarscéal Festival, Roscommon. The prize was a publishing deal sponsored by the Manuscript Publisher. As a result she will launch her debut poetry collection Peripheral this September. She would like to invite the local community to hear her reading from the book at the Carnegie Arts Centre on Friday 28th September at 8pm. Peripheral will be introduced by local poet John W. Sexton. Refreshments will be provided and the event is free of charge. The book will be available to purchase on the night. Faye has previously published an academic monograph Anglo American Insanity Defense Reform: The War Between Law and Medicine (Ashgate Publishing, 1999). In more recent years, she has swapped legal writing for creative writing and to date has had forty poems published in Irish and International Literary Journals. Since her return to Kenmare in 2007 Faye has been a regular contributor to the Kenmare news and has also enjoyed success at short story writing. She was highly commended for a Kerry Literary Award (for Fiction) in 2015. Kenmare News

15th of August in Kenmare Great crowds attended the traditional 15th of August held in Kenmare, there was over 100 cattle which is great to see this tradition being kept alive along with horses, ponies, poultry and other animals. Great credit is due to our Garda Siochana for organising traffic and general management and of course to staff at Kerry County Council and indeed the feedback from the diversion of the traffic through to streets of the town has been mostly positive and something which everybody welcomed. I believe it is right to try out different methods of traffic management such as this and get the feedback from the public and business people of the town to voice their opinions in advance of next year. Visitors and locals alike had a great day. N71 ROAD Caha Tunnel Road Works Closure I am glad that the joints efforts of the Bonane community and Dáil politicians have been successful in ensuring that the proposed road closure from the 3rd September to the 7th September is now been altered so that night time closures will take place to minimise disruptions to road users. The night time closures will be 12 hours from 19.00 hours to 7am and will commence at 19.00 hours on Monday 24th September to 7am Saturday 6th October. I want to publicly thank Kerry County Council for listening to the local community when it came to dealing with this matter. Tralee University Hospital I have been extremely concerned at the fact that operations such as hip and knee replacements have been stopped in University Hospital Kerry. I have been informed that these operations are again to commence on the week beginning the 27th August 2018. It is of the upmost of importance to people who are suffering and waiting to have operations carried out know that operations will be starting again. It was very unfair that they were not been fully informed as to what was happening. In general the waiting lists and procedures not just in UHK but in CUH are totally unacceptable to people who are in urgent need of having procedures been carried out. I have again called on the Minister for Health as a matter of urgency to live up to the promises that the Government gave to people and recommit to ensuring waiting times are brought within a respectable and acceptable period of time. FAIRNESS AT LAST FOR FARMERS UNDER THE FAIR DEAL SCHEME The future viability of the family farm structure has moved a step closer with the announcement of key changes to the Fair Deal Scheme. Minister of State for Mental Health and Older People Jim Daly said that the Government had approved proposals to change the treatment of farms as well as small business under the Fair Deal Scheme. Rectifying the profoundly unfair elements of the scheme has been a top priority for ICSA. For too long, farmers in particular have been stuck between a rock and a hard place when it came to Fair Deal.” I have always believed that

With Jerry McCarthy at the Kilgarvan Show who was demonstrating his mobile sheep dipping unit, the only one in the Republic of Ireland Best of luck to him in his venture.

a three year cap was the most equitable solution for farming families and small businesses. The changes will see contributions from the asset capped at 22.5% over three years and will bring the treatment of family farms in line with the treatment of family homes. The move means an end at last to farmers and small business owners being disproportionately discriminated against. Furthermore, the risk of a productive farm that is being farmed by the next generation having to be sold to meet nursing home bills has been greatly reduced.” I was glad that Minister for Justice Charlie Flanagan visited Kenmare Garda Station today to meet with Superintindent Flor Murphy, Sergeant Fleming and our local Gardaí. I raised with him the need for additional resources in Kerry considering the vast area that is to be covered from Cuhig in Lauragh all through Kenmare and Ring of Kerry and up into Mid-Kerry is a vast area in itself and the Minister is taking on board the points that I made with him. Having raised these issues in the past in the Dáil it is good to have the Minister here on the ground to hear it first hand from the local Gardaí.

I wish to congratulate Mrs Helen O’Sullivan and her hard working committee for hosting a great annual Agricultural Show in Reilly’s Field, Kilgarvan on Sunday the 5th of August. Shows such as this take an awful amount of effort, time and indeed expense to put together, but, it is this type of activity that bonds our communities and it is something for locals to look forward to very much. Thanks again to all the sponsors from the parish and its surrounding parishes who always generously support in every way they can. The lovely Lisa who married Niall McNally from Collorus, Lauragh recently. Wishing you both the very best in your future life together.

GET OUT OF THE CAR; COME UP HERE AND TALK TO ME. “These are not views,” said Kevin. “I’ll show you views”. And without further ado he took out his phone and called a number, saying, “Ray, I have the man for your house.” A dozen years ago Clare fell in love with Ireland and with an Irishman (me). We spent our first years together touring forty two US states while I played house concerts. Many people at those concerts asked about Ireland, “where it never rains”, so we started bringing them over. In October 2013 we brought twenty five people to KENMARE. They loved it. We loved it. So in 2014 Clare and I came to settle here. Clare has a great gift for hospitality. She’s also very sensible. “If we are going to bring hoards of people to Ireland,” she said, “we need the right base.” Clare made a sensible list. Our house must be walking distance from central Kenmare. It must not be on a busy main road. Must not be so big it’s hard to heat. Then, one day, our American friends, Tom and Barbara Zucal and I visited Derrynane beach. Clare was not with us. On the journey back to Kenmare, Tom spotted a sign pointing up a lane way. House for sale! “Let’s go and check it out”, says Tom. We spun round and up the road, so narrow it had grass growing up the middle. We couldn’t find a house but we spotted Kevin. He stood thirty metres away scattering what looked like bird seed. I rolled down the window and shouted up to this mature gentleman . “Excuse me, sir! Do you know of any houses around here for sale or to rent?” He came back in that Kerry way of answering a question with a question. “Which would you want? And, what’s more, slow down!” I was perplexed. “Slow down!” I said. “I’m stopped!” “What I mean is, get out of the car; come up here and talk to me.” So I did. We chatted a while about this n that including the pheasants he was feeding and I mentioned the view of the sea which you could make out about a mile away. “Oh,” said Kevin, “these are not views. I will show you views.”

Then he made his phone call to Ray. Ray seemingly had promised his house to someone else but Kevin persisted. “No, Ray, I have the man for your house.” We followed Kevin west for seven miles, picking up a key in Caherdaniel village on the way. Finally, we turned into a driveway and there was this house. Big kitchen, big living room, six bedrooms! But the views? Kevin was a man of his word!

“Ah, thanks, Kevin,” I said, “ but this is way out of our league.” “No,” says Kevin, ‘‘Tis not. You’ll find a way. This place is for you.” Then I started thinking about Clare’s sensible list? On the way back to Kenmare I said to my trusty friend, Tom. “Let’s face it. If the lady were a real stickler for sensible lists she’d never have married a piano player, would she?” “Probably not,” he agreed. “But” I emphasised, “it’ll take tactics. When we see Clare don’t go into details. We’ll ask her to join us for a drive tomorrow and, once she sees the house and the views she’ll be smitten.” “Okay,” says Tom, “that’s a great plan” But the excitement got to him. As soon as we spotted Clare, he hopped from the car and ran to her waving his hands, “Clare, Clare, Clare, you won’t believe what we found.” Not the plan I’d outlined but Clare considered, ‘if Tom, this normally quiet gentleman has lost the run of himself, what they found must be something very special! You see, Clare knows, being sensible isn’t always about ticking the right boxes. Sometimes it’s about believing in magic.

So now, while Clare runs Thidwick, high above Derrynane, I run, with much help, the Small Roads KENMARE18 theatre Festival and my advice to you is like Kevin’s advice to me. Slow down. Come here and talk to me! - on September 3rd we have a launch at The Carnegie Arts Centre and you can come for a free peek at the plays we’ll be presenting at this year’s festival. A free peak before deciding which plays you want to see in full.

SHIRLEY VALENTINE

You already know why you’re going to see Shirley again. Nobody has ever done her like Susan Hennessy does. If you haven’t seen it yet, ask around. This is a legendary performance by one of Kenmare’s own. SHIRLEY VALENTINE: Plays at the Carnegie Arts Centre in September - 8pm Friday 14th, 8pm Friday 21st and early show 5.30pm Saturday 22nd - as part of Small

Roads KENMARE18 theatre festival. And speaking of home grown talent, Kitty O’Sullivan has a couple of year’s acting school in London behind her. For this year’s festival Kitty will be working behind the scenes as stage manager for Shirley Valentine but from next year she’ll be back in a wonderful lead role. Watch this space

GLORIOUS

You know when you hear something new for the first time like Talking Heads or David Bowie and you think, “that’s not what I’m used to but I love it”. Well, it’s like that with Florence Foster Jenkins, the way Mandy McGahan does her. It is not exactly what we’re used to but we love it. Meryl Streep played Florence as an “old bag” and while that might have been historically accurate most people get a lot more excited about Mandy’s glamorous portrayal. It makes it all the more fascinating when the character looks like she really could sing classical pieces but then proceeds to slaughter them. And in the slaughtering entertains us like never before. I’m no psychologist but I have clinically observed people hiding behind their seats for a song’s performance and then leaping up to scream for more. It’s fascinating to observe. And as a bonus you get the outrageously funny but true story of Florence Foster Jenkins performed by a fabulous troupe now in their second year together. Roman Puech, Mike Sullivan, April Ferron, Jamie L Keough and, of course, Mandy McGahan herself. This play has been directed by Ann Shanahan and revived by the troupe.

GLORIOUS: The true story of Florence Foster Jenkins plays at the Carnegie Arts Centre in September - early show 5.30pm Saturday 15th, then 8pm Monday 17th and 8pm Sunday 23rd - as part of Small Roads KENMARE18 theatre festival. Cindy Freeman is the stage manager behind this play. Cindy, originally from New York State, is in her third year as Stage Manager for our theatre festival. She is also well known and popular in Kenmare golfing circles and much more.

A BIG FAT KENMARE WELCOME

Two of our plays this year have out of town casts. I know you’ll give them a big welcome as you always do. These actors are preparing these plays solely for the KENMARE18 theatre festival. It’s months of work for just three performances. But it’s worth it when they meet our appreciative audiences.

SAME TIME NEXT YEAR

Louise Desmond plays Doris in Same Time, Next Year. Kevin Patrick O’Leary plays George. Louise and Kevin are young Cork actors. Although this is a play about an affair over one weekend a year for twenty six years, it’s a story of family love. A paradox? Yes, but you’ll see what I mean. And like all the plays this year, it’s very funny. SAME TIME NEXT YEAR; Plays at the Carnegie Arts Centre in September - 8pm Saturday 15th, early show 5.30pm Sunday 23rd, 8pm Monday 24th - as part of Small Roads KENMARE18 theatre festival.

MY BRILLIANT DIVORCE

How dare a woman speak so openly about things sexual. Well, I suppose, those easily upset by modern self expression and bedroom feminism weren’t coming anyway, so that’s okay. Siobhán McAuliffe from Rathmore, County Kerry is in her third KENMARE theatre festival. In My Brilliant Divorce the main character Siobhán plays, Angela Kennedy-Lipsky is a very imaginative hypochondriac but also vulnerable, hurt, put upon and brow beaten. She fights back by being outrageous. I said main character because there are twenty other characters (all played by Siobhán). There’s the Dublin mother, the Scottish dog lover, The Cockney Sex Shop Boys, The blind date etc. Siobhán brings them all to life. Siobhán will give a sample of My Brilliant Divorce at our launch on Monday September 3rd. Don’t miss that. It’s a free night for you to check out the plays. MY BRILLIANT DIVORCE plays at the Carnegie Arts Centre in September - 8pm Sunday 16th and 8pm Saturday 22nd and early show 5.30pm on Sunday 23rd - as part of Small Roads KENMARE18 theatre festival. Meghan Kessler-Tobias is the stage manager behind this great production. Meghan is a talented actor taking an off stage role this year. Originally from Northern California, the land of the giant redwood, Meghan has adopted Kenmare as her home and we won’t ever let her go back. She’s too much fun.

Kenmare Men’s Shed search comes to an end, as new venue is unveiled!

Despite almost 2 years of searching, it has taken this long to find a venue for our members. Eventually following discussion with Kenmare Marts and their committee, the manager Dan McCarthy agreed to allow us adapt the empty space under the stands which were being used as a storage area. We cannot thank them enough for their understanding and assistance. We have been cleaning this space out and doing some painting and decoration and will have the place ready by September. Then we can begin using our great range of tools and welcome in new members. New members bring new ideas and each shed around the country has developed in its own way to reflect the needs locally. This has ensured the great success of the Mens Sheds movement nationally. It is proof that the needs of men are being catered for - particularly those living in rural isolated areas and especially those who have come or are coming to ‘pension age’ in next few years. The Mens Shed movement is growing rapidly throughout the 32 counties with approx. 400+ sheds set up so far. Registered as a charity, the movement has grown so fast because it fulfilled a need in the community to address the social needs of men, particularly those in rural community, who are isolated,

unemployed, retired, lonely etc. Having a place to go to, a project to be involved in or just to share a cup of tea can make all the difference to a person’s well-being both physically and mentally. The motto of the movement is “men talk shoulder-toshoulder” and this has been proven true time and again. The Kenmare Mens Shed was one of the first established in South Kerry an area strongly represented in the movement with sheds in Cahirciveen, Killarney, Sneem and Castlemaine being very active. In Kenmare, the current membership comes from a huge variety of backgrounds and life experience and bring a great range of skills reflecting this in; building, carpentry, design, electrics, sailing, angling, wood-turning, veg gardening. For some their only skill is talking and this is just as welcome! We are very keen to have new ideas and skills brought in to broaden the appeal of the group. All members have a say and the small committee will work hard to facilitate all new developments to reflect the needs and wants of the group. The CSO 2016 census for Kenmare town area shows that the male population has increased overall by 34% in past 10 years but more significantly those in the age group 5585+ has jumped by 55% to approx. 320 men.

When the surrounding rural areas within a 10-15 mile radius are added, it can be seen that there could be a much larger number of men who could get value from a Mens Shed. We would like to thank all of those who offered us premises but which were unsuitable due to inaccessibility, rent, space, regulation etc. and those who gave good advice during the time. Special thanks to Susan at the Family Resource Centre who allowed us hold weekly get-togethers there for the past 2 years. Without this we know we could have seen member drift away. Instead we were able to hold together a core group who refused to give up and continued the search. Thanks too for the support and encouragement given by too many to name but especially the other mens shed in South Kerry mentioned above and South Kerry Development Partnership. We will keep you up-to date with developments over the next few months through the Kenmare News. We will inform on opening days and times soon via our Facebook page: www.facebook. com/pg/Kenmare-Mens-Shed. You can contact us through that page or by e-mail to mensshedkenmare@gmail.com. Or better still pop in to see us at the Mart and maybe give us a hand with setting up the new premises.

The long hot dry spell had to finally give way and the memories of endless sunshine are fading away into the distant past but will always be remembered in future summers no doubt. It was dry and it was hot, the summer bedding plants performed very well as long as they were frequently watered but the lawns certainly did suffer for several weeks as they gradually turned shades of yellow and brown as the grass began to shrivel up. But with the recent rains, growth has been restored and all is green again. Some trees have not been so lucky and a pre-season autumn leaf drop has affected trees that had not had an adequate root system to keep the leaves hydrated. The leaf fall is a way for the tree to protect itself from the drought. Even though the rains have come, the process of shedding leaves had already begun and could not be reversed. They should all recover for next year. 1. Grass growth has been very uneven this year due to the dry weather but the weeds still managed to keep going as the grass began to shrivel. Now the rains have come, mowing can resume to tidy up any uneven growth and remove the dried up moss. An Autumn fertilizer can be spread from now on to encourage a quicker response to growth after the dry spell and get the lawn in good shape heading into winter. 2. Flowers in the hanging baskets and window boxes have suffered from the hot conditions and several gaps may have appeared in your patio containers where plants have died. You can fill in these gaps now with autumn heathers and Pansys to regain some colour in your arrangements. Keep a close eye on watering your containers; just because the summer has cooled down a bit and we have had some rain it is never heavy enough to water containers … they will still need regular watering right into September. Apply fertilizer in a liquid feed when you can to act as a pick-me-up for the plants that are feeling sad and off colour. This will help them flower away well into the autumn. 3. Replanting patio containers for the autumn can start from now on, especially if the summer plants are too straggly to recover. Large containers can be replanted by a mixture of shrubs or just

in AUGUST! ... the Willowfield Way a large sized ‘Garden Mum’ (Chrysanthenum) will do the job on its own and will stay in flower until first frosts. Large Bizzy Lizzy can also be used as an instant fix to provide colour for the rest of the summer season. Autumn heathers are now available that will provide colour into early winter. Pansy and Viola will also be available soon that can be used for adding colour to existing containers or for new arrangements. From next month it will be time to start planting up a range of spring flowering bulbs that you can plant at the same time as planting up autumn/ winter containers. 4. Shrubs in the garden have been enjoying the sunshine this summer and have grown happily! If any have grown too much, now is a good time to carry out a trim as they still have time to shoot again and make a small amount of growth before the year is out. Don’t prune any of the spring flowering shrubs as they will lose their flower buds that have developed on the branches during the summer. Evergreen hedges like Laurel and Griselinia should also be trimmed by the end of the month . As mentioned last month, one of the best flowering shrubs for this time of the year are the Hydrangea and now the Paniculata type are coming into full flower and will keep on putting on a display until late autumn. Varieties like, ‘Limelight’, ‘Pinky Winky’, ‘Phantom’ and ‘Candlelight’ are easy to grow and are striking when in full flower. 5. Summer heathers are beginning to put on a god show at the moment and will stay in flower right into October. As well as planting in the ground , they can also be used in window boxes or any type of patio container. The only limiting factors about these summer heathers is that they are varieties of Calluna which can only be grown in acid (peaty) soil, so for a container you can

27

use a special type of compost called Ericaceous Compost in which they can be planted. In tubs and window boxes they can be planted with a dwarf conifer and trailing ivy to make an attractive arrangement. 6. Trim back straggly growth and old flower heads of alpine plants to encourage strong short growth for next spring’s flowers to ‘spring’ from. 7. Herbaceous perennials at this time of year are getting very tall and will need supporting so their heavy flower heads wont collapse in wet and windy weather. Support them individually with bamboo canes or in groups with net supports. Keep an eye out for slug attacks during the last few weeks of summer and apply some slug pellets if you see holes appearing in the leaves. By keeping the slug population under control now it will help keep the numbers under control next spring. Try to use ‘environmentally friendly’ ways to control the slug population. It is better for the birds and hedgehogs who help in controlling the slugs in your garden. A new silver leaf perennial that is available this year is Cineraria Angels Wings; we have some in stock at the moment if you want to add them to your autumn arrangements. 8. In the vege garden keep on top of harvesting crops which have reached maturity and remove plant debris from the growing beds to prevent safe houses for bugs and slugs. Tidy up runners of strawberries so they don’t end up growing everywhere. 9. To add an extra splash of colour to your garden going into the dull autumn and winter months consider painting your garden furniture or garden shed with one of the coloured Ronseal, Sadolin or Fence Life wood preservatives. Timber furniture and fences have dried out well this year and will definitely benefit from a preservative/ treatment now and by choosing a different tint it can certainly brighten up a corner of your garden. 10. TIME OUT! …. sit back and enjoy the last few weeks of summer if the sun ever comes out again ! or drop into Willowfield to see what new plants we have had coming in recently… always something new! See you there!

Beauty of Bonane Back on the Web My sister and her family are visiting me later this month, for the first time since her children were born. Her eldest will be ten in October. She and her husband prefer to holiday in places where they are guaranteed sunshine and, well, we all know that Kerry is not one of them despite the exceptional run of hot weather we’ve had this year. My nephews are now at an age though, when they are wondering what it is like where their far-away aunt lives. So, Ryanair strikes permitting, they’ll be paying a visit to our freshly cleaned house at the end of August.

Report and photography by Heike O’Sullivan

View over the Bonane valley

Having booked their flights early this year, my sister noticed that there is not a whole lot of information about Bonane on the Internet. She is right: Bonane Community Council’s website has been offline for many months now, although Bonane Heritage Park’s and Molly Gallivan’s websites carry some limited information about the area. I must admit to never having taken a course at Kenmare’s fabulous Adult Education Centre before spring of this year. In fact, I hadn’t attended any classes or lectures since 1989, when I completed my job training. This spring though, I took the plunge and signed up for a 12 week QQI (FETAC) Level 4 course in Web Design and WordPress. It’s not that I have any particular interest in IT, but I’ve browsed a website or ten in my life and often marvel at how excellent (or how awful) particular websites are from a visual and user friendliness point of view. Much did I know that us fourteen or so students of Paula Tiller’s spring course started their web design ‘careers’ by learning hand coding (HTML and CSS). It was a far cry from the excitement over screens full of noughts and ones, like back in school in the 1980s, but to me, it was like learning a foreign language – and a peculiar one at that. I found it all rather daunting. Some of us came close to despair in the early weeks of our course, but Múinteoir Paula always found a way to motivate us. Eventually, we were quite amazed at what we were starting to create on screen by typing different sorts of squiggles and brackets. Then came the point when Paula switched us over to WordPress, the online website creation tool that does all the hard work for you.

When it transpired that each of us students had to learn WordPress by actually building a real-life website, I thought I might as well choose Bonane as my subject. I had quite a lot of fun travelling our parish like I did as a tourist more than twenty years ago, taking photos, then researching various Bonane must-sees on the Web. It brought back to me how much there is to discover in a place that tourists often merely drive through, rather than stop and spend time in. Having put so much work into the creation of my website, and the official Bonane one still being offline, I decided in early August to switch my website live. It is still a work in progress. In months to come, I hope to add some more ‘Places of Interest’ and other bits I might think of, and keep my Blog going as long as I can think of topics to write about. I would be delighted if you, dear Readers, go and have a look at www.bonaneblogger.ie. Perhaps you will enjoy reading about Bonane’s places and people as much as I’ve enjoyed writing about them.

If you like what you see and you think, huh, I could do that, too, then check out the Kenmare Adult Education Centre’s upcoming Autumn Courses on www.kenmareaec. ie, or drop in to their office for the new programme. Paula Tiller will run a ‘WordPress’ course (5 sessions) in autumn, followed by an ‘Online Shopping’ course in January 2019. Paula is also offering a 3-morning weekend workshop ‘Promote Your Business on a Shoestring’ on 6th, 13th and 20th October.

Congratulations to Georgia O’Brien who took Gold for Ireland at the Homes International Regatta held in Cork recently, she also won the senior women’s 4X and took Silver for Ireland in a Senior double with Sarah Crummey Belfast Boat Club. Alyce O’Connor, Kenmare District Athletic Club, and Pobalscoil Inbhear Scéine student and athlete, will long remember the outdoor track and field season of 2018. Alyce has competed in nine championship races so far this season, placing 1st in four, 2nd in four occasions and 4th in the All Ireland Tailteann Games 1500m, just missing a medal placing by .05 of a second. Alyce’s main event is the 1500m of which she has ran the distance seven times this season. Her success in this event is remarkable and based on times incredibly consistent. Alyce has achieved three personal bests and an eighteen second season improvement with a best time of 4.42, more importantly Alyce is a championship performer and has great temperament for the big occasion. This year Alyce placed 1st in the South Munster Intermediate girls 1500m, 2nd Munster Colleges and 2nd in the All Ireland at the same event, only a tactical mistake of taking the lead 600 meters from home cost her the title. However, it was a good lesson learned and since, Alyce has won the Munster girls U-18 800m and 1500m and recently the All Ireland 1500m. In all runs Alyce had much to spare. In the All Ireland Alyce ran the last 400m in 69.10, the last 300m in 50.55 and the last 100m in 16.50, the last 300m was at a pace of 4.12. Alyce’s win in the All Ireland gained her selection on the Irish team for the Celtic games. This is Alyce’s first time representing her country and after just missing out of the selection on the Irish schools team, a well deserved reward for her. The Celtic Game’s were held in Scotland on August 4th 2018. Alyce placed an amazing 2nd with a superb run of 4.44. Luke O’Carroll of Tralee Harriers jumped 6.88m in the same event in the U18 boy’s long jump placing him second also.
